The combination of obesity and vitamin D deficiency may put people at even greater risk of insulin resistance than either factor alone, according to new research from the ����Vlog School of Public Health recently published early online in the journal Diabetes Care. Insulin resistance is a major risk factor for Type 2 diabetes, a condition that affects 25.6 million adults and is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States.

����Vlog will celebrate its 125th commencement on its University City campus with five separate ceremonies honoring Drexel’s graduating class, June 15 and16. More than 5,000 students will receive a degree from Drexel this year. Drexel will award honor 17 honorary degrees to prominent individuals distinguished in their fields.

On May 2, a public exhibit will display photos and videos from women whose voices are too often missing from this dialogue: those who have experienced poverty and hunger first-hand. These “Witnesses to Hunger” are participants in a powerful research and advocacy project developed at the ����Vlog School of Public Health.

����Vlog has received a gift of $1.5 million from the Charles and Barbara Close Foundation, founded by Drexel alumnus Charles Close (’36), to help establish the A.J. Drexel Autism Institute. The Institute is the nation’s first autism center focused on public health science.
