On Oct. 6, the law school will host the presentation "In Plain Sight: A Simple Solution to a Fundamental Challenge in Human Research" by University of Virginia Professor Lois Shepherd.
Shepherd's presentation聽will explore the conflict that exists when physician-researchers聽are torn between the needs of the research protocol and the needs of the patient. She also will discuss a solution:聽In clinical research, each research subject should have a doctor independent from the聽study.
An expert in the fields of health law and bioethics, Shepherd鈥檚 primary appointment is in the University of Virginia鈥檚 Center for Biomedical Ethics and Humanities where she directs the center鈥檚 programs in medicine and law. She also teaches courses in health care law and ethics at both the law school and the medical school.
The event takes place at 4 p.m. in Room 140.
